Many do after an eviction, bed bugs, or the tenants just up and leave. That's the people the police should be ticketing! The sad part of it is,that if they would call and schedule a truck or dumpster, it would be provided free. But maybe that's the problem, then they would have to register as landlords and pay their fair share of taxes, and identified their tenants so they could pay any taxes they owe too!

Oh, I was confused, I thought the landlords were cleaning out their properties in St. Bernard and putting it out on Saturday.  Well, it was just a suggestion, if people wouldn't abuse things, it could have been a win win for everyone but there is always someone that ruins it.

There is a dumpster at the garage but it is locked up on the weekends. We had to lock it up years ago because everybody and their brother were filling it up,and we had no control over who was dumping. Why should our residents pay for out of town garbage.
Oh by the way, the blocks that Don T. put signs out on my route, were garbage free!

Maybe along with sending out a calendar, the city can send out magnets with the holidays that there is no garbage pickup to stick on our refrigerators, or better yet, stickers to put on the garbage cans!  LOL!
Also, for the landlords that put out their garbage on Saturdays, is it possible that they may have access to a dumpster down by the service dept to take their garbage too?

Ok,unhappy, but understand my point. When just one person forgets and puts out, then a snowball effect happens and people panic and put their's out too. Along with the people that just don't care, and then the town looks like crap. I see it every holiday.
Joe, I thought you were a Democrat? Chris Christie. Republican governor of New Jersey told the teachers the same thing:" If you don't like your job then find another one." Did you finally see the light?

Joe, read Don's original post please!  This is where this all started. Also, I would tell my neighbors but I see the garbage on my way to work at 6:30 in the morning and they are not up yet by the time I get home, it's time for them to set it back out.  My garbage was not set out this morning because I did get the message.  My point is that I didn't want people to get ticketed for not knowing any better.  The neighbors that I see doing it are newer to St. Bernard, and since this is the day of cell phones, may not be getting the call messages and yes they probably received a calendar but you have to realize hey the garbage men may not be working so I better check the calendar.

I chose public service when I was 18 and joined the Marine Corps, then worked at Wright -Patt Air Force Base, and finally ended up back home picking up garbage for St. Bernard. Most of my contemporaries went to college or the private sector and most make more money even now than I do. I do not belong to a union, but the city does collective bargain with us and I support both. I'm sorry you work where you can't negotiate, that's why I feel unions are important.
As far as the garbage issue I will be back on the job tommorrow picking up both routes, because people like you don't support us by following the rules and telling friends and neighbors that as you say forget. If you do follow the rules, then thanks!
If your going to post things that you know nothing about then you should be ready to be thrashed as you say.
Nobody said ticket first or second time offenders, but the people who always put it out on holidays because they just don't care! To my knowlegde nobody has been ticketed for garbage since I've worked for the city and I would bet it's not going to start anytime soon.

I have also worked 30 years for the same company and still only get 6 like most people who don't have government jobs.  Look for a new job, yeah, where've you been, easier said then done!  Not everyone who has a job gets to negotiate a contract either.  What's a matter gave up on the garbage arguement?  Realized I didn't deserve the brutal thrashing that I got.

I get 10, all bargained for over the last 30 years! Hey if you don't like your benefits maybe you should look for new job.
People like you are ridiculous, everthing we get has been negociated for over the years. Many concessions made by both sides and we have always left the table with both sides feeling fairly treated!
You know it's sad, because I can see what's coming. Just like our A****** governor, bash the unions and trash public employees. If it gets too bad around here I guess I'll move out and hopefully the rest of my 62 fellow firefighter, police, and service department brothers will follow me!

People, reread my post.  I said I know there are problem people that have to be dealt with.  I do NOT put my trash out on when ever I want too, I follow the schedule!  I was just talking about the people who do it inadvertantly because they didn't get the message or did not realize it was a government holiday.  As far as taking your holiday away, cry me a river, I get six paid holidays, how many to you get?  In Mike's defense and mine, see what Don T wrote....he would rather post signs then to have people get ticketed...now this is coming from a council member, and reading the council minutes, they are not talking about the people who put their garbage out on Saturday, they are talking about the holidays and people putting their garbage out.

Any community that would ticket a homeowner for setting out garbage a day early, just because a day happens to be a holiday that is mostly celebrated by public sector employees and those belonging to a union is a community that doesn't care near as much about residents as it does raising money via fines. And I would bet the only people who support such a policy likely get a paycheck from said community.

Mike

Mike you weren't responding to insinuations -- you were stating your opinion.  Go back and read what you wrote.

If I had to deal with those people I'd set their trashcan in the middle of their driveway along with their nasty furniture.  If they didn't have a driveway then set it in front of their porch.  Maybe that'd get the message through.

Exactly dalmation. And I'm pretty sure unhappy has lived here for years and knows the rules!

Joe,

It has nothing to do with where I live. Simply a statement of facts.

Dalmation,

Yes, residents who continuously defy the rules need warning and then a citation. AS do those who set trash out that can blow away - but again on an ongoing basis. I was responding to posts that insinuated that it was fine to ticket residents who once or twice a year set their trash out early because they did not realize collection would be delayed a day.
