Straight dope:

There are no proposals to close the Carthage Rec Center.  Where that started I couldn't begin to guess.

Yes, Carthage Padiea Academy is closing begining with the 2007 - 2008 school year.  Because it is a Magnet School, it draws students from all over the city.  Last time I heard there were only about 20 or so students from Carthage so I would not expect there to be too much impact on Hartwell.

This is in line with the apparent CPS plan to self-destruct the entire district by shuttering the well performing schools thus driving the remaining students to charters and parochials through the use of vouchers.  By the time the plan is complete there will no longer be concerns about an inability to operate within a budget, no more declining enrollment, maintenance problems on the new buildings will be limited to weatherproofing and they will be able to lay off the entire district staff.  On the other hand, reporting state test scores could be problematic with no one around to administer or take the test.

I did hear back from the President of the Carthage Civic League about the school and you are correct, it is proposed to close in a few years.

The Rec center is assumed to be a rumor as well but I am sure we will be keeping close tabs on that.

Carthage, you have my support in any issue you want to fight.  Don't let the city think they can bulldoze over small neighborhoods anytime they want.

I heard Carthage was closing, [probably from the same source as you. But I don't see it impacting Hartwell school much, as Carthage is a Paideia school and attracted children from the entire city.

I have heard talk that Carthage Elementary is closing and moving children to Hartwell Elementary.  True??

I have also heard that Carthage Rec Center is closing.  True??

I have been told by calling Cincinnati Public Schools that Carthage is not moving students to Hartwell.  True??

Sorry....I have been lied to a few too many times over the past few months by heads of departments in the city, what exactly am I to believe or not to believe? 

Does anyone in Carthage have any official word to answer these questions I am being asked by residents?
