Covering the Heart of Hamilton County Since 1983

Joe Nuxhall will serve as grand marshal at Drake Center’s fifth annual Enzweiler Multi-Miler 5K Run/Walk and wheelchair event on Saturday, September 8 at 9 a.m. The event will also feature appearances by co-grand marshals Chris Gabbard and John Hansbauer, Hamilton Fireman injured during an April 17 training exercise. The Enzweiler Multi-Miler will begin and end on the Drake Center campus at 151 West Galbraith Road in Hartwell. Proceeds will be directed to the Drake Foundation to benefit patient therapeutic recreation activities at Drake Center. Previous Multi-Milers combined have generated more than $60,000 to benefit Drake patients.

This event began in 2002 and stemmed from a touching story of Kent Enzweiler, an elite local marathon runner. Kent received a devastating brain injury when he was struck by an out-of-control vehicle in 2001 during a routine training run for the Boston Marathon. Following nearly three years of intensive therapy at Drake Center, Kent worked to regain the basic skills most of us take for granted and was discharged to home.

Kent has always been an advocate of physical fitness and exercise. That’s why proceeds from this year’s event will go toward therapeutic recreation activities at Drake Center. “Drake has good people,” says Kent. “I really appreciate all they did for me.”

In addition to the run/walk, the day will also feature the inaugural concert of the Drake Center Marjorie Music Program. Marjorie Motch, a former patient at Drake, was entertained by a musician who came by her room. That’s why she decided to make a generous donation to the Drake Foundation to sponsor quarterly concerts at Drake Center so patients may experience and enjoy music the way she did.

Runners, walkers, and wheelers of all ages are welcome to participate in this year’s event.  Special awards will be given to the top male and female finishers, and the top 15% of the number of pre-registered in each race division. Other activities include live entertainment, refreshments, and door prizes. Advance registration is open through Tuesday, September 4, and race-day registration is available on Saturday, September 8. Online registration is available at sprunning.com. For more information, contact Drake Center’s race hotline at 418-2528.
