Covering the Heart of Hamilton County Since 1983

The Reading City Council met on Tuesday, June 19. Dave Pflanz read two letters. The first was from State Senator Eric Kearney who thanked Mr. Pflanz for writing him about the abolishment of Mayors’ courts. He will keep the opinions in mind. The other letter was from Duke Energy to say they intend to file with the Public Utilities Commission to raise rates and charges.

Ken Nordin reported that the Safety Service Director provided him with an updated version of the proposed 2008 budget.

Jim Pfennig provided everyone with safety tips. Remember to be careful driving with children out for summer. Use sunblock to prevent skin cancer later on.

Lee Roth noted that at the last Service Committee meeting they discussed the pavers on Benson Street.

Mary Pletz said that Susan Slavey provided a report on the pool. The membership is up. They discussed grants they could possibly get. If you would like to get a booth for the Legion Festival, call 733-9926. There will be a 3-on-3 Basketball tourney on June 30 and July 1.

Bob Ashbrock gave the Zoning, Planning and Environment Committee report. They will discuss garages and other accessory uses at their next committee meeting. They may also talk about the conditions at 8412 Reading Road.

Tony Gertz spoke about the alley that was never vacated. Mr. Gertz feels that there is enough legislation related to high grass and weeds. The Mayor’s court legislation (state) has been put on a slow track.

Mr. Nordin and Mr. Ashbrock would like to get an expert’s opinion on trees before purchasing them.

Mr. Nordin noted that the Reading High School Alumni Soccer game will be July 29.

Bob Boehner provided his report. He met with Mayor Robert Bemmes, department heads and Ray Roshek to talk about the City’s medical insurance. The premiums are expected to go up ten percent this year. Mayor Bemmes, Darrell Courtney and Mr. Boehner met with JMA to discuss SCIP grants for 2008. The first priority will be Orchard Knoll and then West Galbraith. The third choice is the north part of Waxwing. Mr. Boehner, Mr. Courtney and Bob Short met with Sandy Carmargo of CDP to review the newest GIS upgrades. They will be tried in the Service, Police and Fire Departments. There is no cost for this upgrade. There will be an ordinance at the next meeting to transfer money into the Streets and Curbs account. Mr. Bohener asked for an executive session related to personnel issues.

Council passed ordinances to contract with Barrett Paving for street resurfacing project; and employ temporary help (seasonal and pool).
